Detailed information on the practice Montenegro introduced digital tree tagging as an innovative approach to modernising forest monitoring and biodiversity management. Using RFID technology, individual trees are equipped with digital tags that store geo- referenced data, enabling accurate identification, monitoring and long-term tracking of forest resources.

The system creates a digital forest inventory, allowing authorities to record tree species, health condition, diameter, location and other ecological parameters. This significantly improves transparency, traceability and decision-making capacity in forest management.

The digital tagging system supports early detection of forest degradation, pest outbreaks and illegal logging. By integrating collected data into national biodiversity management frameworks, it enhances ecosystem monitoring efficiency and contributes to more sustainable forest governance.

Training and technical capacity building were provided to ensure effective use of the technology and integration into institutional systems.

Timeframe Pilot implementation initiated in 2024

Ongoing monitoring and scaling-up phase

Approximate cost Funded through GEF-7 programme and national co-financing

Includes RFID tags, data systems, training and technical equipment

Results achieved
  • Tagging of over 20,000 trees in pilot areas
  • Creation of a digital forest inventory
  • Improved traceability and monitoring capacity
  • Enhanced data-driven forest management
  • Strengthened institutional capacity
Potential for learning or transfer This practice demonstrates how digital tagging systems can significantly improve long-term forest monitoring and biodiversity data management. It is transferable to other mountainous and protected areas where accurate forest inventory and ecosystem tracking are essential. The model supports sustainable resource management, improves governance transparency and strengthens data-based conservation planning.
