Mt. Žaba (BA)

Mt. Žaba is a Mediterranean–sub-Mediterranean karst mountain in the hinterland of Neum, positioned between the Adriatic coast and the Herzegovinian karst plateau. Rising to 953 m, it is characterised by limestone and dolomite formations, karst relief, caves, occasional streams, and mostly underground hydrological systems connected to Hutovo Blato wetland. Its vegetation changes with altitude, from Mediterranean scrub and maquis to oak and black pine forests on higher slopes. The area supports endemic and protected plants, reptiles, birds of prey, large mammals, and cave fauna, while also forming ecological corridors important for wildlife movement and resilience. Main pressures include unsustainable grazing, illegal logging, forest fires, overharvesting, rural depopulation, land abandonment, habitat degradation, and climate change.
