Mt. Olympus (EL)

Mt. Olympus is one of Greece’s most emblematic mountain landscapes and among the country’s richest floristic areas. It contains a steep altitudinal gradient, extensive forest zones, alpine and subalpine habitats, limestone cliffs, and high-elevation ecosystems of exceptional conservation value. More than 1,700 plant species have been recorded there, representing around 25% of Greek flora, together with rich bird, mammal, amphibian, and reptile diversity. Its ecological value is closely linked to its protected-area status, endemic plants, high-altitude habitats, and iconic mountain fauna. The mountain is also a major cultural and tourism destination, so its key pressures include visitor concentration, trampling, disturbance of sensitive habitats, waste management, and localised grazing impacts.
